Write your life story.

6 x Mondays 9.30-11.30am, commencing 1st July 2019 at the Kincumber Neighbourhood Centre.

Each week we will cover the basics of writing about your life, trying different exercises to help bring your stories to life. We will use music, photographs and interesting exercises to help you recall and write about the memories of the past (or present). You may prefer to write about your childhood or the first day of your retirement - whichever you’d prefer. These can be the small moments or big events that have defined your life – you may choose to write about the strange, funny or the sad.

No writing experience is needed, just a healthy curiosity to learn to write.

Suitable for: over 60’s; people who have recently retired; anyone with an interest in writing about  their life; anyone who would like to learn more about writing short stories or recording their life events.

What will you learn:

·         How to write stories using the senses and other fun and interesting techniques ( music, images and photos)

·         How to let go of the inner voice that says: ‘I can’t write!’

·         How to find your voice when you are writing a story

·         How to have fun when you write

·         The basics of writing an entertaining short story.

·         The basics of editing a short story to bring it to life

This is a hands on course – each week you will have plenty of time to write. If you would like to share your writing with others in the room, there will be time also each week.

Biscuits and tea/coffee will be provided during a short break each week. In the final week of the course, we will have a short presentation, where you may like to read one of your short stories to the group. This will be a celebration of the stories and experiences of writers in the room.

Bring:

Notepad and pen/pencil. Please also bring 2-3 of your favourite photos – we will be using these to help you write over the duration of the course.  If you don’t have photos you could bring in an object or two ( brooch, hat, a shoe – whatever springs to mind!) or keepsake, anything significant from your life.
