Essential by 4.00pm the 14th February

Fifteen years ago, Australians were gripped by

  Aboriginal History Wars.

The central focus of the debate about frontier massacre.

Were they widespread or were they few and far between?

  How can we know?

Today, Australian historians know a lot more about the

characteristics of frontier massacre and how to assess

  the evidence.

In July 2017 a research team at the University of

Newcastle launched Stage 1 of a digital map which

identifies frontier massacre sites in Eastern Australia

  1788-1872.

As we consider the lack of momentum since the

National Apology to the Stolen Generations, Professor Lyndall

Ryan will explore the characteristics of frontier massacre in

colonial Australia and how to asses the evidence.

At the conclusion, we will be left to consider whether

reconciliation is closer, and if the Apology has lived up to its

promise, if we do not acknowledge the facts of our frontier

  history.
